Description

This course will take you from a wannabe sewist to a real one in 8 weeks. I've been sewing for 13 years, and even though that makes me fairly experienced, there's still so much to learn. However, the recent serries of GBSB has made me think over how far I've come and what I've learned along the way. Now I'm ready to share my knowledge with you and get you started on your sewing journey! What we'll cover: Machine basics: How to set it up. Threading, needle selection. What stitches do what, and so much more besides. A Basic sewing project to get you up to speed quickly and build your confidence and understanding of sewing fundamentals. Basic garment sewing techniques to include: How to choose patterns and where to find them. What options are available in the digital era, and how to avoid AI patterns that won't work. Taking measurements and why we NEVER guess or just select our shop size. Fabric selection. Finding the right fabric to match the pattern. Following sewing patterns. How to decipher what it all means and what some pattern companies assume you already know about sewing. How to cut out your pattern. Sounds simple, but I see people do it badly all the time, and why it even matters. How to sew with woven (non stretch) & knit (stretch) fabrics. Pinning, hemming, basting, topstitching, under stitching, and lots of other things that means absolutely nothing right now, but will. Loads of tips and tricks to make your sewing life easier. What we'll make: A tote bag. I know you don't need another one, but its a great project to learn how to sew in a straight line. A simple t-shirt. A pair of relaxed fit elasticated waist trousers, culottes or shorts. You can be wearing a full me made outfit at the end! What's included: Time. 16 hours of it! That's £12.50 an hour. A relaxed, dedicated teaching studio, and a class limit of 4 people. Use of a sewing machine. I have Brother A150's, a great machine with lots of options. Sewing Patterns in PDF form and an A0 print out of each pattern we use. Some basic notions, like thread, interfacing, etc. However if you want to match colours etc you may have to purchase some. Use of all tools in the studio like scissors, pins, clips, irons etc. 10% discount on shop items for the duration of the course (machines not included sorry). What's not included: Fabric. But I will help you decide what's a good choice for the project and you.
