FAQS

You asked, we answered

What does the Sewistry mean?

Every one of us that sews is a sewist, also because the word "sewer" when written has a whole different meaning!

Using the term Sewist also allows us to include all types of people who sew, without having to differentiate between what type of sewing you do, or infer anything about your gender/persuasion.

My hope is that The Sewistry can become a place for all us sewists to belong

Do you service and repair sewing machines?

Not personally, but Simon our engineer runs Bay Sewing Machine Services.

He can be contacted on 07834899264.

Servicing starts at £55, drop off and collection available at the shop. Please note that he can no longer work on computerized Bernina, Pfaff, or Husqvarna machines

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes, of course. Drop by if you need one in person, or click Gift Card on the menu to buy online right now

Can you mend my dress/shirt/ trousers?

No sorry, but I hear good things about Stitch in Time on Peddar St, in Morecambe and Karen's Alterations in Lancaster, as well as The Lancashire Seamstress

Can you teach me to sew?

We run a series of classes, but are brand new at doing so, so if you're a beginner they're ideal for you.

If you're looking for advanced lessons, other sewing classes are available in the area - notably Christine at The Studio Lancaster

Where do you teach your lessons?

There's a small, dedicated studio that we use for all lessons just outside the shop. It holds 6 people at a time

Are children allowed at Stitch School?

They are, but under 18's will only be allowed if accompanied by an adult and class size permitting.

I can't take them off your hands for an afternoon sorry

Do I need to bring a sewing machine to lessons?

No, we have brand new Brother A150's for you to use. And in fact, it's easier and quicker to just use those.

If however you really want to bring your own machine, please speak to us before booking as most lessons are planned with our machines, ready to go, in mind

Do I need to bring anything else for Stitch School?

We will provide all tools and materials unless otherwise stated in the booking information.

If you have fabric or tools that you prefer to use, bring them along and if that can be accommodated, it will.

Some hot and cold drinks are available. Oat milk is always in the building.

I'm running late for my booking, what shall I do?

Give us a call or send us a message if you possibly can, not if you're driving obviously, so we can adjust our plan accordingly.

Ring the doorbell on arrival if the shop door is locked!
